Francesco Moser Will Compete in Saturday's Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup
Former Giro d'Italia winner, former Pro World Road Champion and three-time Paris-Roubaix winner Francesco Moser will be competing in the Pro/1-2-3 race at this Saturday's opening round of the Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup.
"It's an honor to have this legend competing in our race" said Kissena Cycling Club Race Director Charlie Issendorf. "I had posters of Moser on my wall as a junior and to think he will be racing in Prospect Park is really exciting".
So how did Moser end up on the start list for Saturday's race? Moser is in New York City promoting his family's decades-old winery and while at Brooklyn's Lunetta restaurant he was cornered by a number of local cyclists. Kissena Cycling Club member Jules Roazen explained "We invited him to watch Saturday's race but were delighted to learn he'd just as soon race! Victor Rallo from Guardian Undici got him set with a bike and kit while we confirmed his eligibility to compete with USAC. When we started telling the other entrants most of the field replied "we're doomed!"
When asked what he thought his chances are in the race Moser said "I can hold anyone's wheel for 44 miles".
The Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup will take place this Saturday, April 21, in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Races start at 6:15AM.
